Located at the southwestern tip of Shimokita Peninsula facing Mutsu Bay, the village of Wakinosawa had an economy based primarily on commercial fishing. On March 14, 2005 Kawauchi Town (Kawauchi-machi) was merged into the neighboring Mutsu City (Mutsu-shi), along with the Ohata Village (Ohata-machi) and Wakinosawa village (Wakinosawa-mura).
