Ohata Village (Ohata-machi) is located in northern Shimokita Peninsula facing Tsugaru Strait, the town of Ohata had an economy based primarily on commercial fishing, primarily squid, octopus, salmon and sea urchin. On March 14, 2005 Kawauchi Town (Kawauchi-machi) was merged into the neighboring Mutsu City (Mutsu-shi), along with the Ohata Village (Ohata-machi) and village of Wakinozawa.
