This is another more upscale resort area located in the center of the Hakone group, just to the east of Hakone Yumoto. Miyanoshita is a classy hot spring town where many foreigners come to vacation and pamper themselves. The Fujiya Hotel and the Naraya have a long and checkered history together. At one point they were both hotly competing for foreign residents until they finally came up with a compromise. The way it worked, the Fujiya won right to welcome all foreign guests while the Naraya accepted the Japanese visitors. The catch was that the hotel had to compensate the Naraya for lost profits. The Fujiya was once frequented by more foreign guests than any other hot spring resort in Japan, and if you have the time (and money) it’s worth a visit.

Another place worth checking out is Taiko-no-Iwaburo. Here you’ll find a cave-shaped open-air bath situated on a cliff over a waterfall. Sadly, bathing is prohibited, but the view is nice. Also nearby is the picturesque waterfall called Kaiko-no-taki. There are many great hiking trails in the area. You can get trail maps at the hotels, ryokan and tourist offices. Miyanoshita is also where you catch the cable car to Dogashima Onsen. Dogashima offers a distraction-free hot spring experience that is hard to find. There are two ryokan here with numerous secluded, outdoor pools to choose from.
