The Hokuen (Northern) Area (Tenryu, Haruno, Sakuma, Misakubo, Tatsuyama), 90% of which is surrounded by forests, is abundant in greenery and home to lakes and rivers. Through the center runs the mighty Tenryu River. The area displays history and traditional culture as influenced by these surroundings. Futamata Castle Ruins

Futamata Castle was used as a fortress during the battle between Tokugawa and Takeda. This is also known as the tragic place where Tokugawa leyasu’s oldest son, Nobuyasu, was forced by leyasu to commit hara-kiri or seppuku (ritual suicide).

Hamamatsu City Akino Fuku Art Museum

Here the works of the late Japanese-style painter, Fuku Akino from Tenryu, are exhibited. The museum building, made using natural materials such as Tenryu cedar trees and plaster, is also worth seeing. Tenryu Boat Race Area and Kohan House

This is one of the few boating areas in Japan which has a 2,000m race course. The Hamamatsu City Tenryu Nature Learning Center, named “Kohan House”, adjacent to this boat area, is one of the athletes’ home lodgings. Funagira Dam Park is also located here.

Nationwide High School Invitational Boat Race Competition and Tenryu Boat Festival is held in Tenryu Boat Pier. Tenryu Boat Race Festival during Early Summer in which more than 30 teams participate both from and outside the city. Nationwide High School Invitational Boat Race Competition during March 23-25 is known as the representative boat race for high school students. It is held at the 2000m course along the lake of Funagira Dam, which is one of the longest courses in the Tokai area. The total of about 150 selected high schools participates.

Tenryu Rest Stations

In the Tenryu area, there are 3 rest stations (Kunma Suisha Village Rest Station, Tenryu Sozu Hanamomo Village Rest Station, Ippukudokoro Yokokawa Rest Station). Here you can taste a variety of simple and traditional local products which can no longer be found in the city. Soba (buckwheat noodles) and Goheimochi (rice cake) made by local people can be eaten here.
