The Hokuen (Northern) Area (Tenryu, Haruno, Sakuma, Misakubo, Tatsuyama) is surrounded by beautiful green forests nourished by the magnificent flow of the Tenryu River. Various types of traditional culture as well as the simple lifestyle of the local people can be seen here. In the mountainous Hokuen Area, near Tenryu River and its tributaries, people enjoy camping, hiking, and other outdoor leisure activities. You can also take a Tenryu River boat tour or go canoeing in Funagira Water Dam Park. Tenryu Challenge Cycling and 53km long Tenryu Super Forest Road trail also stretches across Tatsuyama, Haruno, Sakuma, and Misakubo. Tenryu Challenge Cycling is a non-competitive cycling event, which course runs through scenic nature of Northern Hamamatsu. Local foods are served at checkpoints along the route.

As the government announced the reorganization of administrative units, Hamamatsu Town, with a population of 13,630, 2,684 households and a land area of 3.17km², was established in April 1888. In 1904, Terajima, Hachiman and Ryuzenji merged with Hamamatsu, and then in 1908, Asada, Ebitsuka, Iba and Higasikamoe also merged with Hamamatsu Town.

Akiha Dam

The Akiha Dam is known for its beautiful cherry blossoms. Akiha Dam Cherry Blossom Festival is held every year in late March or early April as cherry blossoms bloom. Stalls serve local specialties such as konnayku (jelly made from evil’s-tongue starch), tea, broiled sweet fishes, and more. Organized by Regional Development Divisions of Tenryu Ward Office and Tatsuyama Local Service Center. Akiha Dam Sakura Marathon is held on April 3 at the Akiha Dam and offers participants spectacular views of mountains and cherry blossoms.

Tatsuyama Bath Facility “Yasuragi no Yu”

Yasuragi no Yu is located beside the Akiha Dam reservoir. The view of the Tenryu River from the baths is gorgeous and peaceful. People can stop by to relax on the way back from Akiha Shrine which is only a 25 minute drive.

Shirakura Gorge (Valley)

The center of this 10 km long valley along the Shirakura River is an outstanding autumn color viewing spot in the Enshu area. Enjoy sparkling water, bright red Orihime Bridge, Red maple trees surround the views of waterfalls and various sizes of unusual stones. Shirakura Valley Red Leaves Festival is held here during mid November in the season of red leaves, offering food stalls and local performances.

At the Misugi Farm, various local products are sold, including herbs from the surrounding fields and mountains, green tea, Japanese mushrooms, home-made Konnyaku, blueberry jam, wooden products and fresh vegetables.

Tatsuyama Youth Travel Camp Site

At the foot of Mt. Shirakura, the summer cottages, camp site and open space are located amongst beautiful surroundings. You can also try wool working, coloring using plant dyes and making soba.

Terao Bukatako Kite Festival

terao_bukatako_kite_festival During mid June this seasonal Terao Bukatako Kite Festival at Terao commemorated with kite-flying with a 150 year history. In order to pass down this tradition to future generations, its preserving association was established in 1978. A bukatako kite is a landscape-rectangle kite consisted of four skewers, two strings each attached on top and bottom, and no tails.

Sheep Festival

Sheep Festival is held on 2nd Sunday in April at Tatsuyama Seishonen Ryokomura (Tatsuyama Campsite). This event offers many hand-on activities, including sheep figure making, doll making lamb, sheep demonstration, wool, spun yarn, and dishes such as curry, tempura of wild vegetables, and smoked food by joining local farmers.
