Jozan-En is a facility where the visitor can experience the elegant spirit of literary figure called Ishikawa Jozan, who came from Hekkaigun Izumigo in Mikawa (the present-day Izumicho, Anjo) during the Edo period.

Ishikawa Jozan worked for Tokugawa Ieyasu once, but he lost his samurai status when he was 33 years old for disobeying orders during the summer battle of Osaka. He then became a Confucian scholar and opened the Shisendo Poetry House at Ichijoji temple in Kyoto. He spent the rest of his dignified retirement days and enjoyed the writing of poems, free from world cares.

Jozan was not only a Chinese poetry composer, he was also a calligrapher, garden designer, and a founder of green tea. Jozan-En was the space which Ishikawa Jozan expressed his world and displayed his many diverse abilities as a freeman. “Shisenkaku”,resembled to Shisendo and made of wood,is located in the center of the facility. Its “Shisen-no-ma” room displays a tablet with the painting of 36 poets (a duplicate), which was acknowledged as Jozan’s legendary painting by Kano Tanyu. In addition, the area around Shisenkaku is arranged three kinds of gardens that imitates works of Jozan’s three gardens when he worked as a gardener. Stretching across this garden, there are 10 Chinese poem monuments where one can enjoy reading Chinese poems in sequence.

Shisenkaku provides tea service for a fee. Here, you can enjoy deep satisfaction while tasting a cup of tea and feeling the wind through the trees and plants of the season. This is the elegant and graceful world of Jozan, a man who lived a life of tranquillity.
